The G20 Summit is an annual summit held between the world leaders of the top 20 largest economies in the world. In 2022, the summit included an excursion for the attending world leaders to Kura Kura, Bali, an island in Indonesia. For 2022 an art installation was ordered to be curated by Lance Fung and the Fung Collaboratives team. I was brought on board as a creative intern and became a part of developing the installation topic, name, creating a handful of art renders, and creating an illustrated pitch deck to use when pitching to the client and artists and for showcasing to the press.
I joined the team in the very early stages of development and was tasked with studying the local environment and culture. We convened with a team overseas on the island in order to receive their input and feedback throughout the project, making sure that we had the full support of the community as well as ensuring nothing in the exhibition would be offensive or done in poor taste. The name "Constellations: Global Reflections" stemmed from the theme of the summit, "Recover Together, Recover Stronger." The art pieces themselves were to be created by 22 artists, each from the 20 countries making up the G20, and would then be woven into textiles by local craftsmen. These tapestries were then strung around a large metal cylinder and powered by the wind and solar energy, which would slowly rotate the lanterns and light them up at night. The result was a constellation on land when viewed from the air by incoming passenger planes at the local airport. The video on the left shows two of the lanterns in motion from day to night. The photo in the masthead is one of the completed lanterns under a bamboo thatched canopy created by the local craftsmen on Kura Kura.
